Yellowknife opens its first public housing complex to be heated with biomass

Biomass will be used to heat a $2.2-million housing complex in Yellowknife, making it the city’s first public housing heating project to break away from oil. Biomass district heating is used in other communities within the Northwest Territories.

Paulie Chinna, minister responsible for the NWT housing corporation, said heating with biomass energy creates a more sustainable, affordable and healthier environment for the complex’s residents.

Unlike burning oil, burning biomass is cheaper and releases less emissions. Yellowknife’s J & R Mechanical wood pellet boiler is expected to reduce its oil use by 90 per cent.
